A programme of talks focussed on the topic of smallholders from livestock to veggies to bees!
Everyones's free to come along and listen in. You'll find us in the castle in our special demo marquee.
Session 1. Introduction to smallholding (11-12am)
Smallholders from Wales, England and Ireland talk about what prompted them to take the plunge to grow or rear their own food. They will explain what a smallholder is, what it involves, why they decided to become one, what you need (how much land etc), is it possible to earn an income from it or to supplement your income etc.
Session 2. Keeping your own livestock (pigs, poultry, sheep, alpaca and cattle) 12-1pm
Discussion on all the regulations and requirements for keeping a small number of the above animals. What it involves commitment wise, paperwork, herd numbers, feed, space required, slaughtering, butchering, curing your own etc.
Session 3. Growing your own fruit and vegetables (tunnel, raised beds or an allotment) 2-3pm
How much space do you need, which plants grow best under plastic, early or late crops, raised beds, composting, mulching, natural fertilisers, pest control, selling your excess, value added products, selling at markets.
Session 4. Introduction to beekeeping. 3-4pm
Two of our beekeepers will give a short presentation on beekeeping and will demonstrate some of the equipment required.
